School Supplies for Vacation Bible School

School supplies are in high demand all throughout the year. Just last week my daughter had a wonderful opportunity to participate in a vacation bible school at a nearby church. The kids did not have to bring any of their own school supplies, since the program had collected a variety of educational supplies for the kids to use for fun activities and crafts. The church was transformed into Space complete with a Space station, stars, planets, and a galactic hallway made realistic with black lights. My daughter was amazed at the realistic props and had a blast as she discovered space with her friends.
When my family went to the “Galactic Blast” program at the end of the week, there was no doubt that volunteers, parents, and church staff had spent countless hours collecting school supplies and materials to make a space shuttle out of cardboard, a mission control board complete with metal instrumentation. The kids were able to stand behind a cardboard cutout of an astronaut and take pictures. The kids each received their astronaut identification card. For the program, the kids performed a set of songs and then interviewed Galileo the Space monkey. Parents were very impressed.
With donations from the church and other community organizations, the teachers had the opportunity to create a short, meaningful summer program that the families in the community really enjoyed. It was amazing how school supplies such as markers, glue, and construction paper and a talented, creative team of volunteers made such an impression on a small group of kids.
